Contact Status starts at SAL. AE owns the full motion from MQL hand-off through SQO.
CONTACTS ONLY LEADS + CONTACTS
Contacts are worked directly โ€” no separate Lead record. SAL, SQL and SQO are just Contact Status changes.

Pipeline is Marketing- and Sales-sourced only (MQL). Product-qualified leads are off.

โš  CHURNED CUSTOMER IDENTIFICATION

Add Churned as a value on both Account Status (company-level) and Contact Status (contact-level). Lifecycle Stage stays = Customer โ€” always. Win-back re-enters through a new Deal in the renewal pipeline, never by recycling back to MQL or SQL.

CONTACT STATUS REFERENCE

Two separate fields carry status: Account Status lives on the Company and moves in one direction. Contact Status lives on the Contact and differs by where they sit in the lifecycle.

RECYCLE & RE-NURTURE PATHS

CLOSED LOST โ†’ COOL-DOWN โ†’ RECYCLE

Deal โ†’ Closed Lost

  • Lost before Stage 2 (pre-pipeline): contact never became Opportunity. Lifecycle stays = SQO. Contact Status โ†’ Unqualified (hard DQ) or Bad Timing (soft โ†’ stay SQO, enter nurture).
  • Lost after Stage 2 (was Opportunity): Lifecycle stays = Opportunity unless hard DQ. Hard DQ only โ†’ move to Unqualified. Contact Status โ†’ Bad Timing or Unqualified.

โ†“ Cool-down workflow (45โ€“90 days)
โ†“ Active Nurture Category set on contact
โ†“ Re-engagement score triggers

  • Contacts only: Contact Status โ†’ Nurture (custom) after cool-down. On re-engagement: Contact Status โ†’ New, resurfaces in sales view.
  • Leads + Contacts: a new Lead record is created on the contact โ€” re-enters the sales queue fresh.

CHURNED CUSTOMER โ†’ WIN-BACK

  • Account Status = Churned
  • Lifecycle Stage stays = Customer โ€” always

โ†“ Win-back nurture sequence
โ†“ Re-engagement signal

  • New Deal created in renewal/win-back pipeline
  • Account Status โ†’ Active on Closed Won
  • Contact Status is not relevant โ€” they are not a lead

โš  Never recycle to MQL or SQL. Lifecycle Stage must never go backwards from Customer.

BAD TIMING โ†’ ACTIVE NURTURE โ†’ RE-SURFACE

  • Contact Status = Bad Timing
  • Lifecycle Stage stays = SQO โ€” don't reset

Set custom property: Active Nurture Category
Use the CL reason to set the category (budget, timing, competition, no decision)

  • โ†“ Cool-down delay (45โ€“60 days, match to your cycle)
  • โ†“ Contact Status โ†’ Nurture (custom) when delay ends
  • โ†“ Contact drops into campaign specific to their nurture reason
  • โ†“ Engagement score builds back up
  • โ†“ Score threshold hit โ†’ Contact Status โ†’ New
CORE PRINCIPLES
โ—†
Stage is a destination โ€” you graduate to itLifecycle Stage should never go backwards. It represents the highest level of engagement a contact has achieved. Working someone backwards means approaching a qualified contact as though you've never heard of them.
โ—†
Sales should never really care about Lifecycle StageContact Status is the sales rep's guide. Lifecycle Stage is for marketing and leadership reporting. The funnel/conversion reports pull stages from different objects into one view โ€” end to end from contact to deal to company.
โ—†
One Lead record per sales cycleIf you're on the Leads + Contacts model, create one Lead per cycle โ€” not one per contact. Each new sales motion (recycle, win-back, new product) gets a fresh Lead. This keeps history clean without touching Lifecycle Stage.
ASSIGNED REASON (MQL / PQL)

Assigned Reason (formerly "MQL Reason") tells Sales how and why a contact was routed to them, so they can sequence follow-up by source instead of treating every MQL the same.

PriorityAssigned ReasonDefinition
P0MQL: Contact Sales FormSubmitted the Contact Sales form; not student/generic domain; opted into marketing emails; company 50+ employees.
P0MQL: Event/Webinar Hand-RaiserAttended the most recent webinar and replied Yes or Maybe to Sales follow-up.

P1MQL: ChatChat team qualified for an upsell/expansion hand-off; not student/generic domain; opted in; 50+ employees.
P2PQL: Freemium + ICPSigned up for a free trial; Director/Manager/Non-Manager level; matches ICP.
P2PQL: Freemium + Not ICPSigned up for a free trial; Director/Manager/Non-Manager level; outside ICP.
P2PQL: Premium + ICPExisting paid account; C-Level/VP-Level; matches ICP.
P2PQL: Premium + Not ICPExisting paid account; C-Level/VP-Level; outside ICP.

PQL rows only apply in PLG ยท B2B2C mode โ€” toggle it on above to compare against Sales-sourced MQLs.

FUNNEL HISTORY

Lifecycle Stage and Contact Status only show where someone is right now. Funnel History is a separate log โ€” one row per stage transition โ€” that preserves the full timeline: when a contact entered each stage, what touched them, and how many times they've cycled through. It's what makes velocity reporting, campaign attribution, and recycle detection possible without overloading the contact record itself.

TARGET ACCOUNTS (ABM LAYER)

Target Accounts exist at the Company level, not Contact level โ€” they operate as a parallel ABM layer overlaid on the standard funnel.

How it works: flag a Company as a Target Account using the HubSpot Target Account property (Sales Hub Professional+). This unlocks ABM dashboards, ICP scoring, and account-level engagement views. Contacts at Target Account companies should be fast-tracked: even a Raw contact at a Target Account company may warrant direct sales outreach, bypassing normal MQL thresholds.

Recommended setup: Target Account = โœ“ โ†’ auto-assign to ABM sequence โ†’ SDR reaches out regardless of contact lifecycle stage โ†’ if contact converts, follow normal SAL โ†’ SQL โ†’ SQO โ†’ Deal path. Track engagement at both company and contact level. Use the Buying Role contact property (Champion, Decision Maker, Blocker, etc.) to map deal stakeholders on Target Accounts.
